Interesting times

Yesterday was an interesting day.

It started with the message followed by an early morning drive, which was out of ordinary. But then, some occasions are worth the trouble of driving in Delhi's polluted smog. on my way back, i got the call from the Police Verification officer, when I yet again was not at home. i could hear him think, she does not live where she is claiming to live. since i could hear it, i replied to his thought and said i have just stepped out for some work; am out getting the photocopying; i shall be home in under half an hour and will he come then. He said okay, almost grunting-ly.

I called him once i came back and was ready with the photocopies of my documents. and then i got stumped again - where is the receipt that you got when you were leaving the passport office. ummmm, mommy will know [confused faces all around.] By then, not only he but even i doubted whether i lived where i said i did. well, somehow managed to convince him to let go of that requirement and said bye for the time being. Then came to office which included invoices and juniors. Junior, who cannot work with me and i cannot work with the Junior. i think i went red with holding my tears (of exasperation or of anger or of some other emotional drama that i dont know what to call).

And then later in the evening came the NEWS! the banning of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 notes. From being fairly well of to being poor has never been swifter or more real. i suddenly understood how multi-millionaires can also suddenly go bankrupt, the way they show in movies or the way its written in novels. Not that the news affect me much, but it definitely affects so many people i know. Being almost the only one who has a job that pays in bank deposits, i was concerned by how this news would affect my family and relatives and the whole market in which they conduct their business.

By the time i got over the preliminary shock (or something akin to that), i got back to my drafting, finished and then bitched about Junior and the NEWS to my boss and left for home; got so late that i just changed, read a bit, did not open the drink that i had in my room, and slept.

Suddenly, in the middle of the night i guess. i got up and i started saying a word, yaviyon? maybe similar to some word in Catch 22 novel which i was listening to on my way back from work. I thought maybe i got up because i was stressed about my family. and then i tried to think how i could help. but in the muddled state that i was in, that was difficult. I got up, i might as well visit the loo now that my eyes were open. There i found the real reason for me getting up. Two mosquito bite on my lower back and my forearm were itching uncontrollably and the itch was relentless in its desire to be scratched rather than to let me continue in my otherwise peaceful slumber.

Uurrggh.

and well today, Trump won the US Election, which in the grand scheme of things, is just as interesting as my day yesterday, if not more.
